John Cage Recites I-Ching Mesostics
John Cage's feature-length mesostic poetic lecture Anarchy is achieved by his "writing through" 30 quotations from Thoreau's Essay on Civil Disobedience.
Composed with the aid of a computer program to simulate the coin toss of the I-Ching, Cage gives Thoreau's very words a brand new meaning by exploding the original text in ways that de-familiarize and re-energize the words.
Cage's invention the "mesostic" is a formal variant of the acrostic. The mesostic is a writing form where several horizontal lines of poetry are written, one on top of the other, and a word or name is spelled vertically down the middle through a strategic placement of letters.
