  1. 310  Poets in Times of War

  2. In times of war and national and world hostilities, many green and anti-war organizations unite to voice their great love of humanity and plea for cease-fire, the freeing of hostages, and for general world peace. So do poets.

  3.      Creative minds such as poets take on an aesthetic activist role, as they direct their literary artistry against the bloody battles, to raise the idea of a more cooperative world in a form of high art which hopefully will resonate to poets and English Studies through this generation and perhaps the next.

  4.     Some hybrid poets like Tuli Kupferberg, though, are satirical anti-war songwriters, pointing out the ills of our own government, and featuring humor as a main weapon. Kupferberg's protest tune is "The Man on the Flying Trapeze," "Oh he slays from the air with the greatest of ease, the daring old Prez on his U.N. Trapeze, his smart bombs are graceless, all schmucks he does please, My country he's purloined away."

  5. Allen Ginsberg, Tuli Kupferberg, D.H. Melhem, Anne Waldman, and Douglas Oliver.                    May 1991, 50 min  St. Marks Church
